5 stars MC-2A3 Review Update, 2008-10-07

I have done a minor circuit change and replaced the several caps to transform this very good unit to an amazing preamp. Details can be found at: http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.mpl?forum=amp&n=137469&highlight=mc-2A3&r=&session= The sound is much cleaner across the board. The bass is much more natural. I can clearly hear all the bass notes. Before the bass was stronger but somewhat distorted. I compensate for the bass by turning up my woofer plate amps a bit. The best way to describe the changes are now a good vinyl recording being played sounds much more like live music. Below are the changes I did: *Replace all the tubes except for the 2A3C. *Do the small circuit change. *Replace the output caps with 3.3uF Mundorf silver oil. *Use Two 47uF VALAB caps for the 6922 section. *Use one Solen 47uF cap and one Solen 36uF cap in parallel for the 6SN7 section (not enough room for more). I give this mod my highest recommendation. Jim

I just received the MC-2A3 yesterday and am blown away with the improvement! The double boxed packaging was first class and the unit is in perfect condition. I opened the bottom up (thick sheet steel cover)and the quality/workmanship is the as good as I have ever seen. I installed different tubes than came with the stock unit per online recommendations (Mullard, Tung-Sol, JAN military grade. The stock 2A3C tubes do not need replacing. Without break-in I noticed the MC-2A3 was a huge improvement over my current DIY Welborne Ultrapath BP (very nice unit) in all aspects including: *Midrange much more lifelike, clear, and smooth *The highs are more pronounced but not fatiguing at all. *Much more dynamic bass. *The added gain is a plus as my current Welborne Terraplane 300B monoblocks only put out 7 watts per channel. *Dead quiet. *Absolutely beautiful but huge pre-amp. *The on/off switch does not have the best action but is still ok. *It does not have a balance control which is important to me. So far this has not been an issue with this unit. I will give an update later once it is broken in.

This is the best tube amp I have ever listened to, which came as a total surprise!! I read many views and reports on the internet about the fine qualities of the Ming Da preamplifiers, so I finally succumbed and purchased the MC-2A3. It is truly a behemoth in form and performance! I use monoblock 300B amplifiers and vintage Tannoy speakers. With the MC-2A3, the soundstage is larger, the sonic quality(tonality) is smooth, crisp, and detailed. Excellent bass and superb throughout the audio spectrum. Actually, I was blown away. Unbeatable price and performance. Delivered promptly and securely packaged. Very good support frm NY sound.

I ordered from you a Mingda pre MC2A3. I received it in good order, and the sound is beautiful. Great finish, solid built. I use Electrocompaniet UP CD player and EC AW 120 end stage with it. Great ! Thank you for good and quick service. ! Best regards Sigurd Limtun Oslo, Norway

I own this preamplifier for a month with great satisfaction. Outstanding build quality. Perfect musical harmony with Acoustat 2+2, 2 Parasound 1500A , Hand made LP player and Sony 999ES digital source. Dynamics, and lifelike smoothness from top to bottom world class. Cracked plastic cover was replaced without the fuss. Thanks.

Hello! I think it is a real shame that this beautiful Preamp, is unknown here in the U.S. It is beautifully made weighing in at a hefty 47.3 pounds! It is the first Preamp that I have run across, that uses Poweramp tubes (two 2A3 tubes and an EL34). I have no doubt that if this Preamp was made in the U.S., it would cost at least $3000.00 based on its sound quality and build! At $1200.00 it is a steal! I wish Ming Da would market their products here, but I am sure a U.S. distributor would double the cost. Buy it here at N.Y. Sound while you can, because I believe N.Y. Sound is the only importer of this Preamp here in the U.S. I have not seen it anywhere else.
